The meeting in San Francisco on Tuesday, March 8 was very interesting. I am glad I made the trip from Orange County, CA. As I mentioned at the meeting, I am workig on a presentation for the Santiago Canyon College Advisory Board meeting on April 22. My goal is to convince the college that a course in Energy Literacy, Management and Workforce should be offered at this college. I am supported by a department dean at the college. Please contact me if you have content I can reference and please contact me if you are willing to work with me on developing my pitch. I can use your help. Respectfully, Ty Keith ty.keith@fluor.com

Ty, There is a real need for this course. Many professionals didn't get this in college. Teachers who majored in English or history need to learn all about carbon, air, water, building science, etc., so they can teach their students. They need to start with the familiar, like the origin of the word, the OED, the history, then drill down to the science, the physics and the math. Most people do not realize there's solar heat, solar cooking, solar air-to-air, which are less expensive. Many do not know the difference between solar thermal and photovoltaics. Our online dictionaries do not recognize words like renewables.
Energy efficiency and building science will get us even farther along into the transition. Then, the big hurdle is financing. We have to talk about cost relative to savings. Energy touches every subject. Statistics for energy usage in the USA show how much we have to improve. Is it a loss of lifestyle?
I speak with many people who want to make a transition in their lifestyle and have no clue where to begin. And, what's difficult is the lack of demand for the energy auditors and installers EXCEPT maybe California. It is very hard to make a living in the new energy economy. If we educate, we will grow the demand. I hope in 5 years this is all moot.
You may need to focus on the return on investment for the college. The registration for a course would be indicative of a successful offering.
Good luck,
Wyldon

Great feedback Wyldon. Your last sentence was particularly insightful. The meeting in April is to "pitch" this course to the college. Therefore, I need to know what is important to them and it sounds like ROI is something I should address.
Any further advice on how best to prepare for the Advisory Board Meeting would be greatly appreciated. What are the key factors to a go/no-go decission by the college? Is there funding out there, for the creation and implementation of energy related classes, that I can mention during my presentation?
Funding seems to be an issue. If anyone can provide information in this regard I would be very greatful.
Respectfully,
Ty Keith
