We had a good discussion about whether or not to include water into the Energy Literacy scope. Concerns were expressed about what I'll characterize as "scope creep" meaning that the mention of too many different related topics would dilute the messaging about energy. I appreciate those concerns, but suggest that we can create concepts that prevent dilution.
here are a few thoughts for what could be concepts: 1. there is a finite amount of both energy and water. We don't create energy, we don't create water. 2. Water and energy are fundamental to the economy. Agriculture doesn't exist without water + energy. Neither do most manufacturing processes. 3. Human interaction with water in the developed world requires energy - to pump, transport, irrigate, and treat.

I'm not sure how you can not talk about water in almost any energy context. The most obvious issue is that you would be excluding all waterpower systems from conventional hydropower to emerging hydrokinetic technologies such as wave and tidal power. Another important issue to remember is that for most fossil and nuclear powered electric generation there is a tremendous amount of water used for steam and basic cooling. At least as it relates to electricity production, water is an integral part of the process and so concerns about access and competing demand become major issues in discussions of electricity production and siting of new facilities.
